34KV Ring Bus to Switchgear


 

Project Description

This client’s 34kV outdoor Ring Bus at their northeast regional Substation was wood pole construction supporting antiquated equipment in declining condition. The poles were deteriorating and equipment issues and costs increasing.

LCS managed and delivered this project using staff Project Managers, Distribution Construction Managers, Substation Construction Managers, Substation Commissioning/Field Engineers, and Substation Project Engineers.  The LCS Project Manager and team members coordinated all activities from inception through design, planning, procurement, construction, and commissioning to deliver this project. This complex project was successfully delivered with zero safety events.

Project Highlights

  • Designed and installed a new butler style building 50’ x 150’ on slab with indoor 34kV switchgear comprised of (3) 2000A metal-clad switchgear busses connected in ‘Y’ configuration, equipped with 15 feeder cubicles, an RTU, 125v battery system, NovaTek SI system,and (9) sets of stacked reactors in outdoor cages.

  • Installed a new 1500kcmil underground cable from #7, #8, #9 Transformers to migrate their feeds from the outdoor ring to the new indoor switchgear.

  • Installed a dedicated high side 69kV breaker to 69-34kV #9 Transformer to provide the ability to protect and trip #9 t ransformer separate from the transmission path, and meeting compliance with forthcoming NERC criteria.

  • Migrated all (9) 34kV Distribution Lines plus Cap Bank from the outdoor ring bus to the new indoor switchgear via new duct banks, cabling, and aerial lines.
